Car repairs, medical expenses, and home repairs don’t wait for you to be ready. Unexpected expenses can come up at any time, and you may need help covering them in the short term. An installment loan may be a good option in a financial emergency.

Let’s take a closer look at what installment loans are, how they work, when you might consider applying for one, and how to apply for an installment loan at ACE Cash Express.

What is an installment loan and how does it work?

An installment loan is a short-term personal loan that can be used to help cover immediate expenses, such as medical bills, car repairs, or home repairs, if approved. If you qualify for a short-term installment loan, you will need to repay the loan in a series of payments, all substantially equal in amount. You can also make these payments early or pay the loan off completely in advance to potentially save on interest and fees.

Loan amounts you can apply for will vary by state. Installment lenders may offer online loans, in-store loans, or both, depending on your state. Not all states offer installment loans that may fit your needs, and your eligibility may depend on where you live. To apply for an installment loan, follow these steps.

Find a reputable lender near you or online that operates in your state.

Complete an installment loan application. Be ready to provide proof of your identity and sources of income, along with any other documents the lender requires.

Submit your application.

If you’re approved, choose how you want to receive your funds. Depending on the lender, you could get your cash either that same day or the next business day.

Licensed lenders offer personal loans that follow state-specific rules. The lender will set the loan repayment schedule and terms during the loan origination process. Pay close attention to the details of the loan agreement before you sign. If you need help understanding the terms and fees, ask the lender questions.

When might I consider an installment loan?

While borrowers may choose to apply for an installment loan for many reasons, financial emergencies are the most common scenario. If you have an unexpected expense – such as a car repair, emergency medical bills, or urgent utilities due – and you don’t have the money, an installment loan may help cover the expense in the meantime. You may also consider an installment loan if you need more time to repay the loan to better fit your budget.

What are some benefits of an installment loan?

Installment loans offer various benefits to consider when dealing with urgent financial needs, such as:

The flexibility to repay the loan over time instead of all at once

A predictable payment schedule

Higher loan amounts than other short-term loan options are also possible

Be sure to consider all aspects of an installment loan and the lender’s terms.

Are there other personal loan alternatives to installment loans?

Yes! There are other personal loan alternatives to installment loans. You might consider a payday loan if that product is available in your state. A payday loan is a short-term personal loan that a borrower repays in full the next time they get paid, while an installment loan is repaid over time through scheduled payments.

While both types of loans may be used for short-term financial needs, the main difference is that you repay a payday loan all at once, rather than over time as you do with an installment loan.4

Managing your money doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right budgeting strategies, you can build a financial cushion for life’s ups and downs, whether it’s a planned vacation or an unexpected expense.

Making your money go further comes down to two key habits: finding ways to spend less and budgeting smarter. By improving your planning, cutting unnecessary costs, and thinking ahead, you can reduce financial stress and make the most of every dollar you earn.

Getting started is a lot easier than you might think. Budgeting doesn’t require complicated systems or special tools — just a few simple, consistent changes to your financial habits can make a big difference.

Why Is Budgeting Important?

Unplanned expenses like car repairs, medical bills, back-to-school shopping, and major life events can impact your finances. A budget helps you stay prepared and in control when those moments arise.

What Is a Budget?

A budget is a plan for how you allocate your money between spending and savings. It’s a tool that helps you avoid unnecessary spending and stay focused on your financial goals.

With a budget, you can clearly see:

Where your money is going

How much you can realistically save

What expenses should be prioritized

Where you may be overspending

Get Started with a 3-Step Budgeting Method

If your finances feel unpredictable, this simple structure can help you regain control.

Step 1: Map Out Your Bills

Start by listing all your regular monthly expenses, including:

Rent or mortgage

Utilities

Insurance

Subscriptions

Debt payments

When budgeting, it’s important to cover your essential expenses first. These include food, utilities, shelter, and transportation. Track due dates so you can know exactly when money needs to be available. You can use a spreadsheet, a budgeting app, a calendar, or even just a pen and paper for a more visual approach.

Step 2: Plan for Unexpected Expenses

Not all types of expenses are equal every month. Costs like car repairs, medical bills, gifts, and seasonal spending (like holidays, back-to-school, travel, etc.) can easily throw off your budget if you’re not prepared.

If you know you have a specific event or scheduled appointment on a certain day, add it to your calendar. Be proactive about anticipated costs so you can better manage each paycheck.

Step 3: Put Yourself on a Payment Plan

One of the most effective budgeting strategies is breaking large expenses into smaller, manageable amounts. Using budgeting tools or apps can boost your ability to manage and track these payments effectively.

For example, let’s say you get paid bi-weekly. You look ahead at your expense calendar and see that you have one major expense and several smaller bills. Plan to allocate funds to cover the smaller bills first. Then, plan to set aside a portion of your checks toward the major expense.

Rather than waiting and anticipating paying for a major expense all at once, you can put your money into a designated savings account for major expenses and still keep your budget open for other minor expenses.

What If You Have a Fluctuating Income?

If your income changes from month to month, like freelancers, contract workers, or commission-based roles, budgeting can feel more challenging. But it’s still very achievable with the right approach.

The key is to build your budget around consistency. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when budgeting with a fluctuating monthly income.

Find Your Baseline Income

Look at your past earnings and calculate your total income from all sources to identify your lowest typical monthly income. Include tips, commissions, side gigs, and irregular work if applicable.

After you estimate your minimum monthly income, build your budget around that number to ensure your essential expenses are always covered, even in slower months. During more profitable months, you can put more money away in savings.

Define Your Fixed and Flexible Expenses

Make a list of all your bills and note which are fixed expenses and which are flexible.

Fixed expenses stay the same. These might include:

Rent or mortgage

Insurance

Daycare costs

Fixed utility bills (like phone or internet)

Flexible expenses are costs that can change month to month, such as:

Groceries

Varied utility bills (like water and gas)

Dining out

Entertainment

In tighter months, variable expenses are where you can scale back. Identifying needs versus wants in these categories can help you trim unnecessary expenses and better control your overall spending.

Use Higher-Income Months Strategically

When you earn more than your minimum monthly income, use it as an opportunity to save rather than to spend more. Take some time to plan for higher-income months. Otherwise, you may end up overspending on extra purchases.

A helpful approach is to “pay yourself first.” Set aside savings as soon as you receive extra money, before allocating funds to other expenses. You should also be mindful of your financial goals and consider:

Building an emergency fund

Paying down debt

Catching up on bills

Saving for future expenses

How to Stick to Your Budget

It’s easy to create a budget that sets you up for success, but ensuring it runs smoothly requires regular check-ins and adjustments.

Like any habit, consistency matters more than perfection. Focus on small, realistic adjustments rather than strict rules. Here are a few tips for staying on track:

Use a system that works for you. Track your spending with your preferred budgeting method or tool and adjust as needed.

Review your budget regularly. Set aside time each month to check in, adjust, and stay aware of your spending. If you share finances, make it a habit to review your budget and track shared expenses with your spouse or partner to maintain financial harmony.

Set SMART savings goals. Make your savings goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound to give your financial planning clarity and focus.

Treat savings as a recurring expense. Incorporate savings into your monthly budget as a regular expense to help ensure you consistently set aside money toward your goals.

Automate when possible. Some bank apps allow you to set up automatic transfers to savings accounts. Having a schedule can help you stay consistent without extra effort.

Even with careful planning, unexpected expenses can still happen. Having a budget in place helps you stay prepared, but sometimes you may need additional support to cover urgent costs.

In those situations, short-term financial solutions can help bridge the gap while you get back on track. ACE Cash Express offers fast access to funds so you can handle unexpected expenses and continue working toward your financial goals. Find an ACE store near you to see what’s available in your state.

Budgeting FAQs

What expenses should I budget for first?

You should budget for your essential expenses first (food, utilities, shelter, transportation) before budgeting for other necessities and fun.

How much of my budget should go into savings each month?

It depends. Are you trying to bulk up your emergency fund? Do you have debts to pay off? Do you have kids and need to save for college? Consider all your savings goals to figure out how much of your budget can be allocated to savings.

What if I go over my budget?

If you overspend in a category, that’s okay! Scale back somewhere else, like a flexible expense, to keep your budget balanced. Next month, update that category based on what you learned from your spending habits.

How do I budget if I live paycheck to paycheck?

Different people have unique financial situations, so tailor your budgeting approach to fit your needs. Start by understanding how much money comes in and goes out each month. Identify costs that can be reduced or eliminated entirely and take a closer look at your routine spending habits. Look for ways to increase your take-home pay, such as taking on additional hours or moving to a position with higher compensation.

What would you do if you had to rebuild your life from the ground up?

Life can take unexpected turns. Starting over isn’t easy, but with the right support, it’s possible to regain stability and build a brighter future.

MenzFit is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping men get jobs and become self-sufficient by preparing them for long-term employment and financial independence. Populus Financial Group, Inc., dba ACE Cash Express (Populus) proudly supports this mission by hosting financial literacy workshops and providing resources to help participants create stronger financial futures.

This Financial Literacy Month, we’re highlighting how Populus’s partnership with MenzFit equips individuals with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to achieve financial independence.

What Is MenzFit?

Founded in 2001, MenzFit has transformed the lives of underserved men as they achieve long-term employment and financial stability. Many clients come from veteran organizations, homeless shelters, or correctional facilities and are working to rebuild their lives.

MenzFit prepares these men for successful re-entry into the workforce through:

Financial literacy education

Career coaching and job readiness training

Interview-appropriate clothing and professional attire

Skills development and ongoing career support

Since its founding, MenzFit has supported more than 6,500 men in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia as they transition into secure employment. After overcoming significant obstacles on their path to stability, many participants have gone on to become self-sufficient professionals and positive role models within their communities.

How Populus Promotes Financial Literacy

Populus has supported MenzFit since 2008, contributing more than $95,000 through the ACE Community Fund.

In 2025, Populus expanded that support by hosting its first financial literacy workshop with MenzFit in recognition of Financial Literacy Month. Populus designed the curriculum to provide practical financial knowledge that participants could immediately apply in their everyday lives.

“Populus’s financial literacy workshop was well-received by all attendees,” said MenzFit Founder Rhonda Willingham. “Participants said they learned how to put their financial future on a positive track and were impressed with the wealth of information offered.”

These four-hour workshops are tailored specifically to MenzFit clients. Regional Vice President Bee R., Senior Software Engineer Eloy G., and Public Affairs Manager Lauren W., all employees of Populus, helped lead this year’s workshop in Philadelphia.

The sessions cover essential financial topics such as:

Budgeting and money management

Banking basics

Understanding credit and how to build it

Balancing a checking account

Taxes and financial planning

“The curriculum we use for MenzFit clients is structured,” said Eloy. “But if they ask a question that isn’t part of the curriculum, we answer with real-life scenarios, so they can walk out of the room with the understanding they need.”

Participants receive workbooks, educational materials, and one-on-one knowledge checks along the way. Despite varying levels of financial experience, attendees work together to support one another as they learn.

“There’s no judgment,” Eloy added. “Everyone’s trying to learn and better themselves, which is the goal.”

In addition to financial education, Populus also supports clients as they prepare for job opportunities. Through a generous donation, each workshop participant receives a business suit for interviews along with professional essentials (like dress socks, ties, pens, and other accessories) to help present themselves confidently in the workplace.

Expanding Financial Literacy Opportunities

At Populus, we believe access to financial education can open doors to opportunity. While the financial literacy workshops currently take place once a year in Philadelphia, overwhelmingly positive participant feedback has inspired plans to expand the program to other communities in the future.

For Bee, the impact of these classes is best reflected in the success stories that follow. A participant from last year’s workshop recently returned with exciting news: he’s now a homeowner!

“Following our spring 2025 class, he used the rest of the year to lock it in and was able to purchase his home in January,” Bee shared. “He took what we taught him last year and got that home.”

Stories like these highlight the importance of closing financial knowledge gaps that many underserved communities face.

“Once people have the knowledge they need, it changes what’s possible for them,” said Bee. “Not everyone gets that chance, so it means a lot to be part of an organization like Populus that’s helping close those gaps.”

The workshops have also drawn recognition from local leaders. During this year’s session, State Senator Sharif Street visited to thank the team for bringing financial education directly to the community.

“Too often, these communities are overlooked,” said Bee. “Showing up – taking the time to be present – made a meaningful difference to the people we served.”

And the impact of these classes goes beyond participants. It also deeply affects those leading the sessions.

By partnering with organizations like MenzFit, Populus empowers underserved communities and supports individuals as they move toward financial stability and long-term success.

by Cynthia R.

Get Government Benefit Payments Faster with Direct Deposit

by Cynthia R.

When unexpected expenses come up – like a sudden car repair that threatens your ability to get to work or a plumbing issue at home – having quick access to cash is key. Financial service businesses, such as ACE Cash Express, offer a range of online loan options designed to help in these situations. As long as you have access to the internet, you can explore your loan options and apply for an online loan simply and conveniently.

What is an Online Loan?

An online loan is a type of personal loan for which you can apply through a lender’s website instead of going to a physical location. Online loans may include personal loans, cash advances, or short-term loans, depending on the lender. Applying for a loan online is often faster and more convenient than traditional methods.

The online loan application process typically requires personal, financial, and income information. Lenders usually provide details about available loan amounts, loan terms, and the application process on their websites, along with FAQs or customer support to help borrowers.

If your application is approved, you may have several ways to receive your funds. Funding timelines vary by lender, and funds may be available as soon as the same day or by the next business day.

How Online Loans Work

Online loans are designed to provide short-term financial assistance quickly and conveniently. To apply for an online loan, you may need:

An email address and phone number

Proof of a steady source of income, such as employment, retirement, disability, or other approved sources

Social Security number or tax ID

Valid bank account information

Once you apply, most lenders provide a quick decision. If approved, you can access your funds using the methods offered by the lender.

Loan amounts are determined based on state regulations, the applicant’s income, and ACE’s standard underwriting criteria.1

When You Should & Shouldn’t Take Out an Online Loan

Online personal loans may be a useful option for covering certain short-term financial needs, such as unexpected expenses or important one-time purchases. However, they are not appropriate for every situation, and consumers should carefully consider their circumstances before applying.

Here are some instances where it might make sense to apply for an online loan:

Paying for Unexpected Expenses: This is probably the most common reason to take out an online loan. Some unexpected expenses might include: car accidents, family emergencies, household repairs, vet bills, moving, dental emergencies, or vehicle repairs.

Making a Large, One-Time Purchase: A big expense that’s also important, like an A/C unit for your home, may be a good reason to consider a personal loan.

Paying Bills Before Your Next Payday: An online payday loan could be a good option for paying unexpectedly high bills that are due before you get paid again. Payday loans are designed to help you pay for urgent expenses, and the full loan balance is typically due on your next payday.

Some instances where it doesn’t make sense to apply for an online loan:

Paying for ‘nice to have’ expenses: If the expense is non-urgent or discretionary (vacation, luxury purchase, entertainment), or something you could cover by waiting, saving, or budgeting.

You’re trying to fix a long-term financial issue: Online loans generally aren’t meant for chronic budget shortfalls, long-term debt consolidation without a plan, or ongoing medical or living expenses.

You’re trying to improve your credit profile: Some online loans don’t report positive payment history, may involve hard inquiries, or can lower your credit score if mismanaged.

A penny for your thoughts? Not anymore. It’s a nickel now.

After a 230-year run, the U.S. minted its very last penny on November 12, 2025, officially bringing the production of the one-cent coin to an end. It may just be “small change,” but discontinuing the penny will have a noticeable impact on everyday cash transactions.

Pennies are still legal tender, and businesses can continue pricing items down to the cent. However, when you pay with cash, the amount you hand over (and the change you get back) will start to look a little different.

Why Was the U.S. Penny Discontinued?

The first U.S. pennies entered circulation in 1793. Although the design of these beloved copper coins has evolved many times over the centuries, their continued production carried on steadily. Until now.

Modern pennies are made of mostly zinc with a thin copper coating, but even then, rising metal prices and production costs have made them increasingly inefficient to produce. According to the U.S. Mint’s 2024 annual report, each penny cost 3.69 cents to make. That’s more than double the amount it was a decade ago (1.42 cents).

In total, the Mint reported losing $85.3 million from producing nearly 3.2 billion pennies in 2024.

That, coupled with an increasing number of Americans opting for cashless transactions, led the Trump administration to decide that minting the penny is no longer worth the cost.

How Will U.S. Retailers and Businesses Handle Exact Change?

You’re probably wondering what the death of the U.S. penny means for you.

While no federal rounding mandate has been established yet, most U.S. retailers will likely implement rounding on cash payments – a system already in use in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries that said goodbye to their lowest-denomination coin.

For cash transactions, totals will likely be rounded to the nearest nickel. It’s important to note that rounding applies only to the final total, not to individual prices.

Electronic transactions (card and digital payments) will not be affected. The charged amounts will remain exact to the cent.

How to Prepare (If You Still Use Cash)

If you regularly use cash, here are some tips:

Expect rounding to the nearest nickel. Cash amounts paid or received may be rounded to the nearest nickel.

Spend your pennies sooner rather than later. Many retailers and banks are already limiting penny distribution. You should spend them while they’re still accepted.

Convert your coin jar. Did you know the average American household has $60-$90 in unused coins? If you have a full piggy bank at home, consider exchanging its contents at a bank or coin-cashing machine. Just check with your bank or the machine beforehand to see if any requirements or fees apply.

What to Expect at ACE Cash Express

ACE Cash Express offers a wide range of money services, such as bill payment, check cashing, money transfers, money orders, and more. With the end of penny production, ACE cash transactions are now rounded to the nearest nickel – the same practice expected across U.S. retailers and businesses.

And to make things easier, some service prices have been adjusted to ensure any rounding that takes place is to the benefit of the consumer. These updates are already in place at all ACE locations, and additional adjustments may occur over time as nationwide rounding practices continue to develop.

As everyone adjusts to the penny discontinuation and rounding changes, you can still expect the same fast and convenient service at ACE you’ve always relied on!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rounding to the nearest nickel an ACE-specific practice?

No. With the U.S. penny being discontinued, rounding to the nearest nickel is a standardized practice applied across participating retailers and businesses nationwide. At ACE stores, rounding on cash transactions is applied in a manner that benefits the consumer.

If I use cash, will I pay more because of rounding?

Not necessarily. Since rounding goes both ways, the small changes typically balance out over time.

Will pennies still be accepted as payment?

Yes. Pennies remain legal tender and can still be used for cash transactions.

Can I still deposit pennies at my bank?

Yes. Most banks and credit unions will accept pennies for deposit or exchange. Check with them ahead of time to see if the pennies need to be rolled or if there are associated fees.

What does discontinuing the penny mean for the future of cash?

The penny is no longer being produced, but it will stay in circulation for some time. The biggest change consumers will notice is that cash payments may be rounded to the nearest nickel, while electronic payments remain unchanged.

This past Fourth of July, President Trump observed the national holiday by signing a historic piece of legislation: the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

This new law introduces significant changes to federal taxes, credits, and deductions. Its mix of short-term and long-term provisions will affect how Americans file 2025 taxes and beyond.

We understand that major changes like this can feel overwhelming. As your trusted partner every tax season, you can count on us to fill you in on the details so you can stay one step ahead when it’s time to file.

How Will the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Change Tax Laws?

Public Law 119-21, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, OBBB, and OB3, makes several provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) permanent. The TCJA made significant changes to the tax code by reducing rates for corporations, businesses, and individuals. The law also nearly doubled the standard deduction and capped the state and local tax deduction at $10,000. These provisions, among many others, were set to expire in 2025 and return to their 2017 status.

But that’s where the OBBB comes in.

This new legislation prevents most TCJA provisions from expiring while adding new updates intended to benefit working Americans and seniors. Many provisions took effect on January 1, 2026, but a couple are retroactive and could impact how you file your 2025 tax return.

Which TCJA Provisions Have Been Extended?

The OBBB extends and locks in several key provisions of the 2017 TCJA, including:

Lower Tax Brackets – TCJA lowered individual tax brackets to 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. These tax brackets will remain (but are subject to changes enacted by future Congress).

Increased Standard Deduction – The standard deduction amounts for the 2024 tax year were $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married couples filing jointly. For 2025, the amounts are increasing to $15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for married couples filing jointly. These amounts will be adjusted for inflation in future years.

Higher State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction Limit – The SALT deduction has increased to $40,000 (adjusted annually) for 2026 through 2029.

Increased Child Tax Credit – The TCJA raised the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,200 per qualifying child, which will be adjusted for inflation annually.

Taxpayers should review the latest IRS forms and instructions to ensure they are using the correct documents when claiming these deductions and credits.

What Are the New OBBB Provisions for the 2025 Tax Year?

In addition to updating existing provisions, the OBBB adds many new individual tax changes. Some of the tax deductions that will affect the most common 2025 tax returns for working Americans and seniors are:

No Tax on Tips – Workers in eligible occupations listed by the IRS may deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips. This deduction phases out for Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) above $150,000 ($300,000 for those Married Filing Jointly).

No Tax on Overtime – Overtime pay exceeding regular wages can be deducted up to $12,500 per taxpayer with phaseout for MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).

No Tax on Car Loan Interest – Taxpayers may deduct up to $10,000 in qualified vehicle loan interest with phaseout for MAGI over $100,000 ($200,000 for joint filers).

Deduction for Seniors – Eligible taxpayers who are 65 or older may claim an additional deduction of $6,000 with phaseout for MAGI over $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers).

What Are the New OBBB Provisions for 2026 and Beyond?

2025 is only the beginning. The OBBB includes several new tax changes that begin in 2026 and future years, affecting families, homeowners, and individuals nationwide. Some of those include:

Trump Child Savings Accounts – A new tax-deferred savings account for children under 18. Parents can contribute up to $5,000 per year (adjusted for inflation), and employers may add up to $2,500. The federal government will make a one-time contribution of $1,000 per child to an account for U.S. citizens born between 2025 and 2028.

Child and Dependent Care Credit Expansion – Families can claim up to 50% of qualifying childcare expenses, with higher income limits that make the credit available to more households.

Education and Student Loan Benefits – Employers can contribute up to $5,250 annually toward employees’ student loans tax-free, and student loan debt canceled due to death or disability remains non-taxable.

Mortgage Interest Rules – The $750,000 mortgage interest cap is now permanent, and private mortgage insurance (PMI) may be treated as deductible interest.

The OBBB extends and locks in several key provisions of the 2017 TCJA, including: Lower Tax Brackets – TCJA lowered individual tax brackets to 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. These tax brackets will remain (but are subject to changes enacted by future Congress).Increased Standard Deduction – The standard deduction amounts for the 2024 tax year were $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married couples filing jointly. For 2025, the amounts are increasing to $15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for married couples filing jointly. These amounts will be adjusted for inflation in future years.Higher State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction Limit – The SALT deduction has increased to $40,000 (adjusted annually) for 2026 through 2029.Increased Child Tax Credit – The TCJA raised the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,200 per qualifying child, which will be adjusted for inflation annually. Taxpayers should review the latest IRS forms and instructions to ensure they are using the correct documents when claiming these deductions and credits. What Are the New OBBB Provisions for the 2025 Tax Year? In addition to updating existing provisions, the OBBB adds many new individual tax changes. Some of the tax deductions that will affect the most common 2025 tax returns for working Americans and seniors are: No Tax on Tips – Workers in eligible occupations listed by the IRS may deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips. No Tax on Car Loan Interest – Taxpayers may deduct up to $10,000 in qualified vehicle loan interest with phaseout for MAGI over $100,000 ($200,000 for joint filers).Deduction for Seniors – Eligible taxpayers who are 65 or older may claim an additional deduction of $6,000 with phaseout for MAGI over $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers). What Are the New OBBB Provisions for 2026 and Beyond? 2025 is only the beginning. The OBBB includes several new tax changes that begin in 2026 and future years, affecting families, homeowners, and individuals nationwide. Some of those include: Trump Child Savings Accounts – A new tax-deferred savings account for children under 18. Parents can contribute up to $5,000 per year (adjusted for inflation), and employers may add up to $2,500. The federal government will make a one-time contribution of $1,000 per child to an account for U.S. citizens born between 2025 and 2028.Child and Dependent Care Credit Expansion – Families can claim up to 50% of qualifying childcare expenses, with higher income limits that make the credit available to more households.Education and Student Loan Benefits – Employers can contribute up to $5,250 annually toward employees’ student loans tax-free, and student loan debt canceled due to death or disability remains non-taxable.Mortgage Interest Rules – The $750,000 mortgage interest cap is now permanent, and private mortgage insurance (PMI) may be treated as deductible interest.

Taxes seem to follow us everywhere.

Buy something from the store? Sales tax. Purchase a home? Property tax. Book a weekend at the beach? Hotel tax. And of course, with every paycheck, there’s federal income tax, state tax (depending on where you live), Social Security, Medicare, and other withholdings.

The good news is that when tax season rolls around, you may have options to reduce your tax bill and keep more money in your pocket. One of the biggest decisions many taxpayers face is whether to take the standard deduction or itemize deductions.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through both options and explain what’s changed under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

What Is the Standard Deduction?

The standard deduction is a fixed dollar amount you can deduct from your taxable income. It’s adjusted yearly for inflation and is a flat reduction from your adjusted gross income to determine your taxable income.

The amount for which you may qualify depends on your filing status (single, married, head of household, etc). Additional benefits apply if you’re 65 or older or visually impaired.

Since you don’t have to keep track of expenses, nearly 90% of taxpayers take the standard deduction because it’s the simplest and quickest option. Check the guidelines listed on the IRS website to ensure you qualify to take the standard deduction.

What Does It Mean to Itemize?

Itemizing requires you to keep track of your eligible, deductible expenses and subtract that total from your adjusted gross income. You must have the proper IRS-approved documentation that reports this total, such as receipts or statements.

Some examples of deductible expenses include:

Out-of-pocket medical bills

Acknowledgement letters from charitable organizations

Tax documents of mortgage interest

Personal property taxes

Unlike the standard deduction, the amount when you itemize isn’t fixed, as it depends on your actual expenses. This option is worth it for taxpayers whose total amount of allowable itemized deductions is more than the standard deduction. See the instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) and follow IRS guidelines on limits and qualifications.

Standard Deduction vs. Itemized Deductions: How to Decide

The easiest way to decide whether to take the standard deduction or itemize is to run the numbers both ways and see which gives you the bigger deduction.

To itemize, you need to keep track of what you spent throughout the year on deductible expenses and add up the total amount. If it’s less than the standard deduction, take the standard deduction. If it’s more than the standard deduction, itemize.

Here are a couple of common scenarios to consider:

Homeowners with a mortgage often benefit from itemizing because of payments towards mortgage interest and property taxes.

Renters often stick with the standard deduction unless they have large medical bills or significant charitable contributions.

What Self-Employed People Should Know

Being self-employed comes with many perks. However, it also comes with extra tax responsibilities as you’re responsible for paying them yourself.

If you earn more than $400 in net earnings (income minus expenses), you must file an annual tax return using Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. You’ll also need to make estimated quarterly tax payments to cover both income tax and the 15.3% self-employment tax, which includes Social Security and Medicare.

The best approach is to set aside part of every payment you receive. For example, if you earn $40,000 in net profit and expect to owe about 25% in taxes, plan to pay around $2,500 each quarter for the $10,000 tax responsibility.

Luckily, self-employed workers can claim valuable deductions such as business advertising, education, health insurance premiums, home office costs, and work-related travel. Be sure to keep good records and receipts.

How the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Changed the Rules

On July 4, 2025, the U.S. Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made significant updates for tax years 2025 through 2028:

Standard deduction amounts were permanently increased.

Taxpayers 65 and older can now deduct an additional $6,000 per eligible individual.

Annual inflation adjustments still apply, so deduction amounts will rise slightly each tax year.

Because the IRS will continue to adjust the standard deduction amounts to keep up with inflation, it’s strongly recommended to review your expenses each tax year to decide whether taking the standard deduction or itemizing is right for you.

Tax Credits That Can Lower Your Bill Even More

Whether you take the standard deduction or itemize, tax credits can reduce your bill dollar-for-dollar. A few common ones include:

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Credits are powerful because they reduce the amount of tax you owe directly, not just your taxable income. For example, let’s say you owe $2,500 in taxes but qualify for a $1,000 Earned Income Tax Credit. Your tax bill drops to $1,500 regardless of your deduction choice.

If you’ve been asking yourself, “Should I itemize or take the standard deduction?”, the answer ultimately depends on your personal situation. For many, the standard deduction is quicker and easier. But if your eligible expenses are high enough, itemizing could save you more. Either way, understanding your options is the first step toward a smoother tax season.
